Join the Sporting Society of Algiers for the 2nd Annual Cirque d’Algiers, a bicycle festival with races and entertainment, from noon - 5 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2012. Children ages 5-12 will compete in bike races around McDonough Memorial Park in Algiers Point. With the races, a kick-off parade, circus-themed performances from acrobats, unicyclists, puppeteers and more, live music, crafts, and an assortment of food and beverages to purchase, there will be something for all ages.
Cirque d’Algiers bike race participants may register now here or on the day of the race. Registration is $15 for one child and $10 for each additional child from the same family. Winners in each of four age categories will receive special prizes and every participant will receive a T-shirt and award.
Fostering a diverse sporting and social culture in Algiers
Algiers Point and its sister neighborhoods in Lower Algiers are like many New Orleans neighborhoods. They have leafy streets, an array of architecture. There are bars, coffee shops, barbers, hair dressers, churches. You name it, Algiers has it, or at the very least had it at one time.
But what is there for kids? Where are the friendly neighborhood competitions?
